Day #9

WOW! My smoothie is very tasty today. I mixed one packed cup of swiss chard from my garden/1 cup of apple/pear juice/1/2 cup blackberries and blueberries. It is NOT green, it's purple due to the berries. And oh, so delicious!
What was your combination today?

  1. The smoothies i have made in the last day seem to have gotten away from me a bit. I was even thinking about calling them 'chewies' instead of smoothies. i added 2 scoops-whey protein powder, and a handful of raw almonds, 60% of blender-swiss chard, handful of strawberries, 3 blackberries, splash bolthouse carrot juice, splash vitamin c juice, water to blend...
Let me tell you---they were THICK. i'm not sure if the whey powder has something to do with it or not, but that's okay. They tasted good and are filling.
I've decided to drink mine today after my yoga and body sculpting classes to get the full protein benefit.
i'm really loving the smoothies so far. I hope you other ladies/gents are having a great experience as well.
    YUMMMMMY!

i also read this snippet on my google pages-worlds healthiest foods link- i figured since many of us are using swiss chard, it might be interesting to read.

    Enjoy!!

    SWISS CHARD:
If vegetables got grades for traditional nutrients alone, Swiss chard would be one of the vegetable valedictorians. The vitamin and mineral profile of this leafy green vegetable contains enough "excellents" to ensure its place at the head of the vegetable Dean's List. Our rating system awards Swiss chard with excellent marks for its concentrations of vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium, manganese, potassium, iron, vitamin E, and dietary fiber. Swiss chard also emerges as a very good or good source of copper, calcium, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, protein, phosphorus, vitamin B1, zinc, folate, biotin, niacin and pantothenic acid.

  3. Thanks for the info about swiss chard. It's always been a mystery to me what to do with it so will buy some and see if the smoothie is my entree into enjoying this over achiever!

  4. Word of caution: start with a 1/2 cup and work into it. It can be quite strong tasting at times.

  5. I tried making a smoothie the other night. note the "try"? I used spinach from our garden, watermelon, strawberries and a carrot.

I didn't HATE it, but I'm not loving it either. Only drank 1 of the bottles so far. Advice?

  6. Saturday.

Thanks for the tip about the potency of the swiss chard. I'm heading to the grocery this morning and will pick up some.

At this very moment I'm totally enjoying my mango / Just Barely smoothie. Should have looked up how to prepare a mango before diving in - I peeled one and treated the other one as I would an avocado - neither way was easy. I'm thinking perhaps mangos simply aren't an easy fruit to get into?

I've learned that if I use a base of OJ, and include vanilla yogurt and the rice protein powder, anything else I throw in the blender seems to work well - we'll see if this remains true with the swiss chard.

Keep experimenting Heidi. You'll find the combinations that taste good to you!
